Bandung, the capital city of West Java Province, is the third largest city in Indonesia, populated by about 2,5 million people, with 1,400 people per km2 density. Located at about 700m above sea level, the temperature of Bandung ranges between 19-23oC throughout the year.

Bandung has an economically strategic position due to its relatively short distance (129km) from Jakarta. Surrounded by smaller towns rich in natural and industrial material producers, manufactures, craftsmen, and other forms of skilled labor, since the 1930’s Bandung has had the reputation as the distribution centre for world’s fashion industry; and the city is also a favourite destination for shopping and culinary experiences.

Jakarta | the busiest airport in South East Asia, Jakarta, reflects the dynamics of this restless metropolis. Once dubbed as the Pearl of the East, today is a home to 9.608 million (2010) inhabitants, coming from different regions of the country. It is crowded, packed with motorcycles and cars, but you may still find traces of Dutch colonial buildings, Sunda Kelapa Harbour, remains of old Batavia at the Fatahillah Square, and many other interesting tourist attractions. More about Jakarta ….

Bandung | a weekend-escape town for Jakartans. Located at 768m asl, Bandung is cooler than Jakarta. During weekends and long weekends a line of cars could be seen on the toll-road heading to Bandung or the  Paris of Java, as it was dubbed by the Dutch. It is a very charming if not romantic city, with stylish and creative inhabitants, old Dutch art-deco style buildings well preserved, green tea plantations on the nearby hills of Lembang and Ciwidey, and this fashion filled city and culinary delights city is so close to the Tangkuban Perahu volcano.   More about Bandung …

Yogyakarta | shortened and spelled as [jokja], is The Heart of Java. Island of Java may not be the biggest, but Javanese as they say, are everywhere, all over Indonesia. The daily pulse of Java tradition can be felt here, and the Yogyakarta Region offers stunning structures, Borobudur Temple, Prambanan Temple, and many other smaller temples. More about Yogyakarta …

Bali | Morning of the world, island of gods, paradise island, you name it. Perhaps one of the strongest force of attractions why people keep coming to Bali is its well preserved tradition; Hindu but slightly different with unique rituals, friendly inhabitants, and last but not least its idyllic and manicured utopian landscape ; beaches, rice terraces, volcanoes, and perhaps monkeys. Peucang Island

Many tourists skip West Java and Banten, and go to Bali or Komodo first. Peucang is considered too far and perhaps too expensive. Whatever the reason, it is worth the trip.

Experience This

If there is a place that you will remember for the rest of your life, it is Peucang. Small island, green, trees, forest, deers, wild boars, monkeys wandering around. Sparkling shallow water, pristine sandy beaches, a place to be alone. Sit there by the pier or white sandy beach, watch the green lush mystical Ujung Kulon forest at the distance across the Peucang Strait. A dark stork flying by, very low almost touching the waters, aiming for fish. A sea eagle high above the sky, lurking down. Before sunset, big black bats fly from one tree to another, to find a place for the night. Once in a while a baby shark swims to the shallow waters, full of small fish to be eaten. As it gets darker, sound of cicadas in the quiet night, owl, and other night birds.

It’s a place to listen to nature, and your heartbeat. It’s calm, quiet. Wake up early morning when it’s still dark and wait for sunrise lurking slowly from behind the Ujung Kulon forest, painting the skies with glowing colours. It’s Paradise !

Notable dignitaries who have visited the Peucang Island and Ujung Kulon National Park are: Charles Lindbergh in 1967, and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in 1989 on their quests to see a live Javan Rhino in Ujung Kulon National Park.

Panaitan or Prince Island

For surfing enthusiasts the waves near Panaitan Island is more than challenging if not scary. Above Peucang Island lies this bigger but totally uninhabited island, where in 1771 Captain James Cook anchored HMS Endeavour. Somehow, Panaitan Island was once named Nassau Island, an interesting blog here by Peter Ulrich Zanger about the history of the island.

Getting There

Getting to Krakatau, Peucang Island, or Ujung Kulon National Park.

Route from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport “Jakarta International Airport” located in Banten Province:

  • We will meet you at the airport and take you via Merak Toll Road to Carita. After about two hours drive, exit the toll road, we will be driving on the Anyer-Carita coastal-road, along the east coast of Banten. This is a long stretched resort area, a weekend getaway for Jakarta inhabitants who love beaches and sea. The view is refreshing. Palm trees, beaches, villas, cottages, and a silhouette of Mount Krakatau is also visible.
  • Arrive at Carita, checkin at the hotel. We recommend for you to overnight at Carita, to “adjust” a little bit.
  • Depends on time of arrival at Carita, lunch and/or dinner will be served at a local restaurant. Carita, a small town, might be crowded on long-weekends. But this is town is relatively quiet. You may swim, bodyboard, relax by the beach at Carita Bay. Beautiful sunset towards Sunda Strait, with the view towards far-away shade of Mount Krakatau.
  • Next morning, early start, after breakfast check-out, proceed to Lippo Marina where boats are moored.
  • Option A: cruise directly to Peucang Island.

Do I have to overnight at Carita ?

  • Krakatau (Carita > Krakatau): it is best to start cruising early morning from Carita, latest by 9:00 A.M.
  • Krakatau + Peucang Island (Carita > Krakatau > Peucang Island): for late arrival at Soekarno Hatta International Airport it is best to overnight at Carita and cruise early on the next morning. If you start early from Jakarta, no need to overnight at Carita.
  • Peucang Island (Carita > Peucang Island): it is best to start early morning from Carita, but we may also start cruising before noon.

Peucang (Sundanese languange) means Java mouse-deer (Tragulus javanicus). A species of even-toed ungulate in the family Tragulidae. When it reaches maturity it is about the size of a rabbit (or bigger, but smaller than deer), making it one of the smallest ungulates. It is found in forests in Java and perhaps Bali, although sightings there have not been verified. In daily speech, Indonesians call it Kancil, and every schoolchildren knows one or two stories about kancil which is often described as a clever animal. Peucang was called Meeuwen Eiland by the Dutch, perhaps due to many seagulls around the island during the “quest-for-spices” days hundreds years ago.

Derawan 3D2N / 4D3N

This golden triad of islands — Derawan, Sangalaki and Kakaban — allows the few visitors who stumble upon them to float with reef manta rays, doe-eyed dolphins, sea turtles, sharks, barracudas and, of course, the aforementioned non-stinging jellyfish, right off the coasts of three coral-reef islands.

Labuan Bajo 3D2N

A perfect getaway for adventurers on the westernmost tip of the Island of Flores, the town of Labuan Bajo, or also spelled Labuhan Bajo, sits peacefully a small fishing site with surprisingly comprehensive tourist facilities. The central logic for its wide range of amenities is the extraordinary interest of travelers to the existence of the Komodo dragon, locally called ora, if not for its superb national park that encompasses some 80 islands. To most travelers and to westerners who own businesses here, the developing town is somehow favorable and even romantic. The view on wooden cottages with thatched roofs camouflaged by shrubberies and towering trees up in the sloping township, overlooking an idyllic harbour, make an evening conversation with traveling partners an unforgettable experience. For some adventurers, Labuan Bajo can be an ideal getaway.

Lake Toba 3D2N

Lake Toba is one of the awesome natural wonders of the world. This enormous crater lake has an island, Samosir, almost the size of Singapore in its centre. At over 1,145 square km, and a depth of 450 meters, Lake Toba is actually more like an ocean. This is the largest lake in Southeast Asia and one of the deepest lakes in the world.

Feel the wind in your hair and do as the locals do by cycling or hiring a motorbike to explore this beautiful part of the world. If you’re on Samosir Island, take the day to explore by taking a drive on the road running around the edge of the island. Although rough and unpaved in places, this road offers some spectacular views of the lake from the highest points on the island. If you’re staying in the popular village of Tuk Tuk on Samosir, the best way to get around is to walk, or wander, down the main street at a leisurely pace.
